The Hydrogen to Humber Saltend (H2H Saltend) project, near Hull, will comprise a 600 megawatt auto thermal reformer (ATR) with carbon capture, the largest plant of its kind in the world, to convert natural gas to hydrogen.

Meanwhile it has been reported that the Government intends to announce a hydrogen strategy before Parliament closes for the summer, as part of its economic recovery package.

GMB and other unions have long maintained a UK-wide hydrogen strategy will ensure Britain hits its net zero carbon emissions targets, while generating jobs and supporting economic growth.

Gary Carter, GMB National Officer, said: “GMB welcomes the announcement by Equinor they will be building this huge hydrogen plant with carbon capture. In the march towards reducing carbon emissions and achieving net zero, this is an important development.

“There are quick and easy wins that can be made with hydrogen, like blending it into the gas grid with no effects for consumers and instantly slashing emissions from gas central heating.

"GMB now calls on the Government to make the bold first steps to a hydrogen strategy that will generate jobs and support a greener economy.”
