Alcohol gels and foams rapidly
decontaminate clean hands if they
are used correctly. However,
according to Teal Handwash, the
alcohol content of the hand rub
must be at least 60% to be effective.

Used incorrectly, says Teal, it won’t
reduce the risk of infection.

If hands are visibly soiled Teal says
they should be washed with hot
water and soap. The company
comments that hand washing with
warm water and liquid soap, using a
recognised technique, will remove
transient organisms.
