Hart supplies 20 Typhoon doors for Hebrides installation
HART DOOR Systems is celebrating its largest ever order by total weight. The Newcastle upon Tyne-based firm will supply 20 Typhoon doors weighing over 60 tonnes for a contract in the Hebrides

The order involves various door sizes up to 8 metres in width with the installation being carried out in challenging conditions due to an exposed marine environment, explained the company’s MD Nick Hart.
The Typhoon is rated up to 4Kpa (4000 pascals) wind resistance, surpassing the BSEN 12424 class 5, which is tested to 1250 pascals.
“We have seen growing demand for this door solution, which is unsurprising given that global warming has increased the frequency and velocity of storm events,” said Hart.
Extreme wind pressure due to storms in areas naturally exposed directly to the sea or on hillsides can be further exacerbated by local topography and adjacent walls or buildings, leading to wind funnelling. Meanwhile, opening other doors in a building can also create an unforeseen pressure risk.
The density of the air is another factor that needs to be considered at the specification stage. Static pressure testing does not model buffeting and gusting effects, which is why the design incorporates a higher safety factor.
“With over 80 years of experience in industrial roller shutter doors, we have used our extensive engineering knowledge to ensure the Typhoon shutter is strong and long-lasting,” said the company’s chairman Doug Hart. “The heavy-duty construction of each Typhoon fully complies with British and European safety standards and will efficiently deliver performance for many years to come.”
As one of Britain’s leading manufacturers of automatic high-speed doors and security shutters, Hart’s in-house design and testing process allows it to vary the specification of its doors and shutters to comply with additional standards. For instance, Typhoon can be combined with the security rating LPS1175 to SR3 standard with manual or automatic locking and operation, and speed enhancement for smaller doors which may be operated more frequently.
The door curtain is available in insulated or non-insulated steel or stainless steel profiles, with galvanised, powder-coated or pre-finished plastisol options.
“The issue of extreme typhoons in Asia has been in the news again recently. One such area is Hong Kong, where we have installed Typhoon doors on a multi-story data centre and supplied them to various airport units,” Nick Hart concluded. “The Typhoon roller shutter is perfect for delivering security in areas exposed to extreme winds from tropical storms such as hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones.”
