Helping members to close the skills gap
James Fudge, education and training co-ordinator at the Manufacturing Technologies Association believes that, as well as bringing enthusiastic young people into the sector there is a need to harness the talent that is already there
It’s an old issue, but one which remains pressing; the manufacturing technologies sector, along with the engineering industry as a whole, acknowledges that we are facing a skills gap that requires a new generation to fill. According to Engineering UK’s 2014 report, the overall engineering sector is going to need 87,000 people each year, over the next 10 years – so this is by no means a small gap that can be easily papered over.
At the MTA we have been working with our members to offer a number of different options to help them with the development of their workforce. We offer training grants to members who are looking to up-skill and to help develop and further the knowledge and skills of their current employees.
As well as making an annual award for machine tool design (AMTRI Scholarship) we also help members to offset the costs associated with training. Grants are available to pay for training courses that are accredited or industry recognised programmes; we will match fund (50%) any successful application, assuming the course will help the business to develop.
But it is also about the future generations, and this is where apprenticeships are going to play a vital role. For generations, apprenticeships have been key in developing and delivering the skills and talents that our industry needs and the Government’s commitment can help to narrow the latest gap. With our ageing workforce, apprenticeships are a fantastic way of transferring skills, inspiring a generation and keeping our sector vibrant and competitive.
Apprenticeships are also an excellent way to provide good quality training on the technologies and skills needed in advanced manufacturing whilst benefiting both apprentices and employers. They provide a great way to help businesses grow their own talent, while developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce. One of our key offerings to members aims to help ease cash flow in the first year of taking on an apprentice. We offer grants to members as well as the option of a £10k interest-free loan to help cover these associated costs.
Since 2008 we’ve been supporting, helping and encouraging members to invest in apprenticeship training. There is £100,000 available to support members with a turnover up to £10 million in taking on a new apprentice. This includes £2000 grants that are available for apprentices on national frameworks and being delivered by approved providers. In addition, a £10,000 interest-free loan may also be applied for – payable over 12 months and is repaid over the following 12 months.
We all know that the skills gap needs addressing and that there is a lot that needs to be done. At the MTA we are working hard with all our members to help them to address this issue, to try to ensure that we are all ready for what the future throws at us.
