THE INAUGURAL edition of the IP&E Awards proved a resounding success, with judges praising the diverse range of entries. 

"Given the quality of the entries we received, our judging panel were faced with the daunting task of identifying the people, companies, and solutions which they felt represented among the very best of British industry," explained Edward Lowton, editor of Industrial Plant & Equipment.

"Together with our winners and those who were recognised in the Commended and Highly Commended categories, we’d like to thank all our nominees for taking part and for helping make the first edition of the IP&E Awards such a success, together with our panel of judges for providing their time and expertise." 

The next edition of the IP&E Awards has already been announced and will be taking place in-person, concurrently with the Industrial Maintenance Solutions Summit at Coventry’s CBS Arena on 10 September 2024. 

Honouring individual talent

John Pauley was the winner of this year’s award for Engineer of the Year, with the judges praising his “remarkable journey within CBI Terex, from his start as a design intern to his current role as product engineer lead”.

"I feel extremely grateful to be the recipient of the Engineer of the Year Award. Even the nomination was quite a humbling experience and I am just thankful for those who have thought highly of me and my work," Pauley stated. He emphasised that the recognition offered by the awards "is one of the most powerful motivators".

"Everyone likes to think they are doing a great job but that recognition gives the reassurance many departments, companies, and individuals need to keep the quality of work high. I think it is essential to recognise those who are keeping the industry moving, not only to showcase the high performers but to bring attention to new and exciting things that are happening," he highlighted. 

Recognising company-wide contributions

A number of this year’s IP&E Awards recipients emphasised that such recognition was highly important for their employees. 

Rachel Sugarman, sales and marketing lead (UK) at Verder, which won the Industrial Product of the Year award for its Verderflex iDURA 45-80 range, said the Awards offered the opportunity to "celebrate the unsung heroes in research and development or production teams". "It is so important to provide recognition to the people that work tirelessly in areas that often go on behind the scenes," she added.

These sentiments were shared by John Shaw, sales manager at Freevolt Technologies, which won the award for Material Handling Solution of the Year.

"Winning this award is a reflection of our team’s efforts over the last couple of years, to design and develop a UK-made solution which can provide tangible benefits across multiple industries. We feel that awards like these are a fantastic opportunity to recognise amazing innovation and cutting-edge technology development taking place in the UK."

Spotlighting the success of ‘UK PLC’

The IP&E Awards honour all the elements that make UK industry exceptional, covering everyone from the engineers, executives, and businesses who are leading the way, to the latest ground-breaking products, solutions, and services. They also address how the sector is tackling important challenges like sustainability and the STEM skills shortage, which will be a big focus in the years to come.

"Honouring the brands, companies, and individuals that make up the UK manufacturing industry is key to the success of ‘UK PLC’," affirmed Andy Hill, EMEA sales and global marketing manager at Philadelphia Scientific UK, which won in the Industrial Small-Medium Enterprise of the Year category.

"The IP&E Awards not only celebrate the achievements and successes of the business community but also serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for others. It fosters innovation, job creation, and economic growth, making it vital for the overall prosperity of the UK, not only in the manufacturing sector but throughout all the other industries.
