From 1st January, 2017, IE3-grade energy efficiency will be compulsory in the European Union for mains-operated electric motors in the rated power range 0.75 to 375 kW. This extension to smaller motor sizes is based on the Regulation (EC) 640/2009 implementing Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC.
