A tank can suffer many problems, one
of them being external corrosion.

Caused by weathering, thin-wall
effects result in a loss of strength,
and possibly leakages. Natural
movement or deterioration, as well
as mechanical damage, can also
cause leakage problems.

Welding, says Belzona, may be
precluded by the contents of the
tank, and could cause damage to the
internal lining.

An alternative solution offered by
Belzona, a manufacturer of speciality
industrial coatings and polymer
composites, can overcome these
problems without ‘hot work’. The
company can apply a cold bonding
solution, a method that does not
require shutdown, hot work permit,
or the de-gasing or reclassification of
the equipment. Cold plate bonding
can be done by glue or injection,
using products that provide high
levels of adhesion.

Belzona recently tackled the
corrosion of a tank’s metal floor,
which was leaking oil.Welding was
not possible and neither was
draining the tank of its contents. The
Belzona solution consisted of the
application of Belzona 1111 (Super
Metal) and Belzona 1831 (Super
UW-Metal) onto a plate which was
then used to reinforce the surface of
the tank, and stopped the leak.
