The document, which has been put together in collaboration with GS1 in
Germany, aims to identify distinct classes of pallets by appearance. It
distinguishes between three grades of used pallets and provides
realistic criteria for classification.

Paul Davidson, CEO of Brepal, which regulates the EPAL business within the UK and Ireland, said: “All used EPAL pallets
must meet a minimum standard to be exchangeable. However, there is a
considerable variation in the appearance of the pallet and this is reflected in an
informal classification of used EPAL pallets into different grades.

“EPAL has recognised that there is a need in the market for some definition of
these various qualities in order to facilitate exchange, so it has worked with GS1
Germany to issue this classification guide for used EPAL pallets.”
