Despite wearing safety footwear, 65% of tradespeople surveyed cited cold feet as their top problem, with wet feet (40%) and bacterial infections such as athlete’s foot amongst the other nasties thought to be the worst side effects for those exposed to the elements. 

In the UK, as in many other countries, there is no legal maximum or minimum outdoor working temperature. Whilst employers are responsible for providing adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect employees during extreme weather, three quarters of workers surveyed actually take responsibility for selecting their own safety footwear. 

Commenting on the research, Jon Marchant, global category manager at Airwair International – Dr. Martens said: “To keep safe, warm and dry when outdoors, industrial workers should really invest in quality protective footwear.  You should always check first that they meet current EN and ISO safety standards and then look for features that are going to help keep your feet warm and comfortable in the tough conditions you may be working in.”
