With more than 100 year’s of
blending and roasting coffee
behind it, Ferns Coffee is in
business for the long haul
and, as such, was keen to
invest in quality marking
equipment for its Basingstoke
production line when its 30-
year old printer needed
replacing. It opted for a new
53XL80 thermal transfer coder
from Allen Coding Systems.

Justin Slawson, MD at
Ferns Coffee, explains: “We
opted for the 53XL80
thermal transfer coder for a
number of reasons, including
the fact that it has a bigger
print area than many other
models, plus it offers many of
the advanced features of
more expensive alternatives.

“It can contend with a
number of different
applications and print a
variety of information such
as fixed and variable text,
data and graphics, bar codes,
real time, sell-by dates, batch
numbers, prices and source
codes.”
Other benefits reported
include excellent print quality
at 300 dpi; cassette ribbon
loading; 600m ribbon capacity;
print speeds of up to 40
packs/min and the ability to
cope with a potential increase
in business.

Allen Coding created a
new frame to allow the coder
to fit easily on to the section
of the customer’s packaging
machine which pre-forms
laminated film pillow packs
for coffee.
