Dr Sinead Keogh, director IMDA said: “Despite high unemployment, many medical technology companies are finding it difficult to find suitably qualified engineers. IMDA is delighted to have been granted funding to provide this hugely successful programme, which gives engineers and science graduates the additional skills needed to help them find jobs. In 2012, 78% of participants secured employment in the high-tech sector and 12% went on to further education.”

Following the completion of the 2013 programme, 48% of participants secured employment in the high-tech sector; 13% of participants were on internship placements, and 4% went on to further study; 35% are currently seeking employment. 

Pauline O’Flanagan, IMDA Springboard Manager said: “Over the past two years 120 jobseekers have completed the IMDA programme, and 30 companies have facilitated interships. On successful completion of the training programme, 60 participants will receive a Certificate in Quality Engineering, HETAC Level 8 and a Diploma in Management, HETAC Level 6. We are thrilled that our programme is among the 167 programmes in 38 colleges which were approved for funding.” 

“The availability of these skillsets are key for the sustained and continued growth of the medtech sector. In 2013 the sector exported products to the value of €8 billion, making Ireland one of the largest exporters of medical technologies in Europe. The sector employs over 25,000 people, which makes Ireland, per capita, the biggest medical technology employer in the Europe,” Dr Keogh concluded.
