The nature of the manufacturing
process at SCA Hygiene’s mill
in Skelmersdale
means paper dust
is constantly
generated and
despite control
measures, it builds
up at high level
where lighting is
located.

When SCA put together a
proposal for energy efficient lighting,
T5, induction and LED technologies
were all considered. T5 was chosen
based on a package available from
Ecotronic.

The requirement was for a light
fitting that could be controlled in a
flexible way. The Ecobay IP65 fitting
was selected. Mike Leary of SCA
Hygiene Products, says: “I had
almost given up on T5 technology,
due to the heating issues that can
arise when a T5 lamp is enclosed
within an IP65 enclosure. The Ecobay
IP65 fitting eliminated this risk by
mounting the ballasts within a
separate enclosure away from lamps.”
Ecotronic installed intelligent IP65
daylight saving units for production
areas and occupancy controlled units
for warehouse aisles. The fittings had
a sensor with a ‘large eye’ to avoid
any dust. A lower cost IP20 unit is
used in warehouse areas. Light
quality too has improved.
