British Airways (BA) has incorporated
Schneider Electric’s Altivar 61
variable speed drives (VSDs) into the
condenser water pump system at its
Flight Training facilities at Heathrow
Airport. The solution has resulted in a
significant saving for the business
while helping to overcome
operational difficulties on the system.

Schneider Electric originally loaned
British Airways and EMCOR an
Altivar 61 VSD to test its performance
and prove the return on investment it
would deliver. BA was so impressed
that it then took the decision to install
drives on two star delta pumps, and
with Schneider Electric’s assistance
they now operate at 12kW each,
compared to 90kW previously.
