extruders are
susceptible to
damage from
contaminants in the
raw material making
metal detection and
removal a vital
element in the
process.

During production,
the edges of the film,
which are thicker than the
main body, are cut off,
creating long strips that are
reground and added to the
new polymer. The process
can result in the introduction
of metal particles that may
damage extruding and
stretching machines. To avoid
this, the mixture of recycled
and virgin flakes pass through
metal separators.

Brückner uses S+S Rapid
Dual metal separators to
inspect bulk
materials, such as
recycled film shreds,
and high-volume
new material in
free-fall conveyor
pipes. The
separator detects all
magnetic and nonmagnetic
metal
contaminations, even
when embedded in the
plastics material. These are
then rejected by means of a
double flap, ‘Quick Flap’
system, which keeps the loss
of good material to a
minimum.
