More than 40 members of AJT’s 111-strong workforce are participating in the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) Working Safely course.

Ronnie Brown, health, safety and quality manager, said: “Following the successful implementation of 5S at our Altens facility in Aberdeen, we’re rolling out 6S across all four facilities – adding safety to the other 5 elements”. 

“As part of the safety roll-out, we analyse our performance in key safety areas, with initial focus on safe use of work equipment, housekeeping standards, high-risk elements that are specific to each of the facilities, and safety culture.”

The culture element considers the way people behave, and to what extent they participate in the day-to-day running of the safety management system, their attitudes towards safety controls, PPE, observation reporting and their taking ownership of safety issues.  

Brown added: “The IOSH Managing Safely course aligns perfectly with our 6S initiative and has provided our employees with the knowledge and tools they require to work, think and act safely.”

The course aims to improve the safety culture within the organisation and provides employees with an understanding of how their actions in the work place contribute to safety, health and well-being, as well as their individual safety responsibilities in keeping themselves and others safe at work.

The certificate issued is an international safety certificate based on best practice and provides an awareness of general workplace hazards and focuses on why health and safety is important to the well-being of the worker and those around them.
