Waterwise Technology is helping
BAA achieve some of the highest
efficiencies in water treatment in the
UK at Heathrow’s newest terminal.

Using a combination of ozone
treatment for the cooling water and a
water recycling system, Heathrow
will achieve reductions in energy and
carbon emissions.

The Waterwise Filtex Ozone water
treatment systems, already used on
other installations at Heathrow, will
reduce water consumption on the
cooling towers by 15% compared to
some chemical treatment methods,
while eliminating the environmental
impact of transportation, packaging
and waste containers associated with
chemical treatment.

Effluent water from the cooling
towers will be recycled using a
Waterwise Oasis recycling unit
which returns a high proportion of
the waste water as fresh make-up
equal to or better quality than the
incoming mains water supply.

It is anticipated that the plant will
recycle 75t/day of water. Overall
waste flow to drain will be reduced
by in excess of 75%. Based on
DEFRA figures, the system will
reduce carbon emissions by
approximately 190t/year when
operating on mains water supply.
