About us
Usually when a company tells you it was founded in 1968 its trying to tell you something about longevity and experience but with its peers boasting of 150 years of history, Byworth Boilers is a relative teenager in its field.Like many teenagers, Byworth is driven by a youthful inquisitiveness, embracing new ideas and technologies and never accepts conventional thinking simply because "we’ve always done it like that”.
Byworth were the first to recognise that rising fuel costs were the most significant risk for many steam users and in 2007, after a two year development programme, launched the Yorkshireman2 which, 6 years on, remains the most efficient steam boiler available anywhere in the world. The development was seen as so significant they surprised many by winning2009 Food Processing Awards Technical Solutions Award.
Air preheaters are a much ignored technology in the UK. Offering longer life and much better fuel efficiency than a traditional flue gas economiser, they require significant space and capital investment.Byworth changed all that in 2010 when it installed the first two of its revolutionary compact low-cost air preheaters on two of the companies 3500 kg/hr Yorkshireman2 series boilers in a London Laundry.
The new technology approach is also evident on entering the firm’sYorkshire factory where traditional skills mesh seamlessly with techniques more at home in a Japanese car plant.A visit to the factory also reveals a surprising number of young faces, bucking the trend of many an engineering firm struggling to attract a younger employee. Production Director Robert Baldwin points out "We work really closely with local schools and colleges to encourage people into engineering and we take apprentices on every year. Many of our key personnel are in fact graduates of the apprentice system”.One such graduate now heads up the company’s next big project: Jason Atkinson, runner-up Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2011 is unabashed in saying "the integrated boiler control systems out there today are basically just a burner controller with a discrete level and TDS controller added on – they’re simply not using the data they’re collecting effectively. What we’re doing with UNITY is to think about how all of these discrete signals can be brought together and then made to work together to give the user a system far greater than the sum of its parts. What we’re offering is a boiler house making intelligent decisions based on multiple pieces of information while at the same time makingthat information globally available over LAN or WAN”
Byworth Boilers manufactures shell boilers starting at 250 kg/hr steam or 100 kW hot water with the biggest units offering 20,000 kg/hr steam or 12MW of hot water. The company also operates the most modern fleet of boilers for hire and has become a key player in the training of boiler operators and steam users.
The first Unity control systems will begin shipping in August.
