Dura grating reduces risks

29 January 2015

Historically, risers have posed significant health and safety risks during both the construction and operation of a building.

Lend Lease developed a system for use at the London 2012 Olympic Village to ensure that risers were protected at the formation stage so reducing the risk of falls from height of people, tools and materials throughout installation, operation and maintenance of the building.

Following an incident in which a riser platform fell to the level below injuring an operative, Lend Lease adopted the policy that all temporary floor penetrations in the Olympic Village would be covered. One of their preferred solutions was to use Dura Grating Service Riser as the initial penetration covering which became the permanent covering when cut to receive services.

Dura Grating Service Riser is a glass reinforced plastic grating with high slip resistance, durability and known load bearing capacity. Dura Grating Service Risers can be installed following formwork removal as the risers form part of the general floor plate. The mesh size of the service riser floor (12mm) ensures that a traditional ply covering is not  required.  It can easily be cut to size to fit designed cast apertures in concrete floors, which allows for the risk of falls from height to be controlled from the outset in both service risers as well as lift risers. Once the Dura Grating material was in place, any required service penetrations could be cut using a standard jigsaw tool, eliminating hot works and the risk of fire (compared with checker plate inserts, for example).

The benefits of the Dura Grating system were:

–  elimination of the risk of falls from height of people, tools and materials.

–  reduction in manual handling due to its lesser weight than metal checker plate.

–  elimination of hot works.

–  protection of the riser for follow-on trades and building operation and maintenance.

Dura Grating Lift Risers can be installed on each floor during the build to provide worker safety on site; they can then be cut to suit permanent riser shaft equipment services.
