Hart’s high speed doors a symbol of North East innovation

23 January 2026

IT IS absolutely right to switch on the spotlight and point it straight at Hart Door Systems. Why you may ask. Well in England’s North East, a region famous for problem solving inventions, here is another example of some fresh thinking, the development of the high speed industrial door, now known world-wide as SPEEDOR.

Under the chairmanship of Douglas Hart, ‘Hart Doors’ has been an extremely busy company improving, for example, the roller shutter by designing and manufacturing shutters through its Firebrand range of fire shutters, Terror Screen security and roller shutters and Typhoon, tropical storm shutters. As a measure of the company’s success Hart has 20,000 doors and shutters in action in 36 countries

There is no doubt that the shutter needed upgrading as the temptation to leave a roller shutter ‘open’ is too great. This made the area near the door almost ‘no-go’ certainly in the winter. It was absolutely right in many ways to leave the doors open but apart from speeding up materials or finished goods, the ever open door syndrome creates a no go zone near the door with escalating energy costs as a result.

This level of innovation from North East England should not be a surprise as the region pioneered the development of the lifeboat, the steam locomotive, the safety lamp, the hydraulic crane, the power grid and hydroelectricity.

Today’s Speedor brand is tailored to meet different requirements. For example Speedor Mini is for internal use, likewise Speedor Storm is for external use, Speedor Cleanroom for high speed use and Speedor Smart is for conveyor systems.

Recently four Speedors were installed at a major frozen and cooked meat manufacturing plant where the Speedors were just 1.5m wide and 1.95m high, are the second smallest Speedors ever manufactured by Hart. This demonstrates Hart’s flexibility and ability to meet precise requirements.

Climate Change and the high-speed door

A final thought on Climate Change. The latest warning about global warming is that glaciers can no longer self-cool. There is an immediate need for all of industry and commerce to take steps reduce energy consumption. Clearly industry from manufacturing to storage, needs to assess the efficiency of the premises they occupy so it can reduce energy consumption in busy warehouse or production facilities.

The classic is the ever open industrial door which not only allows costly heated air to escape but colder air to penetrate the building.  For the exasperated plant manager there is a solution for temperature control and energy management. It is Hart’s automatic, Speedor door range.

With quality engineering and durability, Speedor high-speed doors will maintain temperatures within a building while keeping energy costs at an acceptable level. Hart’s Speedor Storm is ready for anything the weather can throw at it. Be it a factory, warehouse, storage facility or any kind of plant operation, where doors must be open frequently for people and traffic the Speedor Storm can withstand wind up to ‘wind class 5’ as defined by DIN EN 12424.

Whether it’s access for deliveries, forklifts or people, there are far too many businesses that leave major entrances open for an unnecessary amount of time. The knock-on effect is wasted heating, higher costs and a less than optimal working environment.

Speedor Storm is designed specifically to take care of this. It can help with productivity because entering and leaving can be done more rapidly than non-automatic doors. Further it enhances the working environment because the high-speed operation, even on large doors, means there are no unnecessary open stages.

In turn this lowers energy consumption, important at a time when the cost of energy shows little sign of improving and of course reduced energy use has a positive impact on Climate Change. In conclusion Hart Door Systems’ Speedor range can make a very significant contribution to energy conservation and a carbon footprint.
