Waitrose has developed and installed a hydrocarbon-based refrigeration system that is free of hydrofluorocarbons, a source of carbon emissions.

Helping Waitrose towards its green goals is Next Control Systems, which provides round-the-clock remote monitoring services to monitor refrigerated cabinets and storage areas in the company's shops.

Next also provides building and energy management services, managing and controlling heating and lighting. Savings of up to 14% on power sources have been delivered with average pay-back time between eight and nine months. Systems have been upgraded to full IP networked and wireless systems.

The company is also controlling and remotely monitoring the new refrigeration system, which involves chilled water being moved round the cabinets to remove excess heat generated by the refrigeration.
