The Carbon Trust has helped Heinz
slash energy use and CO2 emissions at
factories in Kendal and Kitt Green by
more than 17,000t over the last four
years.
Heinz's energy managers, working with Carbon Trust experts, found that a lot of energy was needed to heat the cold water used to rehydrate dried beans. Energy is also needed to create the steam that cooks the beans in their cans. Capturing and recycling waste heat from these processes means less energy is needed to heat the water, which in turn has led to a drop in carbon emissions.
Heinz has also saved more than 13% of its annual energy costs in its Kitt Green food processing complex over the past two years.
