Gas detection within industry calls for different monitoring methods to suit the different hazards and processes, as well as the layout of the plant. Draeger says using its latest technology, modern gas detection systems can be designed and installed more economically than before. It says that not only do its systems include long life sensors but the systems can help reduce maintenance costs.

There are many different gas detection systems from a wide variety of suppliers. The problem, says Draeger, is that choosing a cheap system today could lead to high levels of expenditure in the future. The true cost of ownership goes beyond the initial capital outlay with false alarms, high maintenance levels and a regular supply of spare parts adding to the system's actual cost.

Unless a system is reliable, it could also mean that faults go unreported, leaving a dangerous environment and, as a result, a chance that those working in and around the workplace could pay the ultimate price.
