A new partnership led by offsite construction specialist, Yorkon, has been awarded the contract to design, build and fit out a £9m laboratory at Dounreay, Scotland. This project is the first Active Analysis Laboratory

A new partnership led by offsite construction specialist, Yorkon, has been awarded the contract to design, build and fit out a £9m laboratory at Dounreay, Scotland. This project is the first Active Analysis Laboratory for the nuclear industry to be built using modular construction.

The £7m contract was awarded by site clean-up contractor, Dounreay Site Restoration, to a partnership comprising off-site manufacturer and main contractor, Yorkon; nuclear ventilation designer, Studsvik; JGC Engineering & Technical Services who will manufacture and install the nuclear ventilation system and M&E services, and S&B UK, specialist in fume cupboards and lab equipment.

Construction is due to start on site in spring 2012 with completion scheduled for autumn 2013. Six labs will be provided.

These will be constructed from 35 steel-framed modules made at the Yorkon production centre. They will remain in use for up to 25 years until the site decommissioning process has been completed.Modules are easy to disassemble, recycle and re-use.
