Monitoring the exposure of air hazards and dust at work
08 January 2019
Casella has launched an improved version of its Dust Detective Enclosure which provides short-term boundary and environmental monitoring in both indoor and outdoor environments and can monitor over 12h on its internal batteries.
In 2017-18, there were 12,000 lung disease deaths in the UK due to exposures of air hazards and dust at work, and a further 20,000 estimated new cases of occupational breathing problems reported. Protecting the health, safety and welfare of their workforce is the responsibility of the employer, who has an obligation by law to assess the level of risk in the workplace and take the reasonable steps to eliminate apparent risks and put in place appropriate control measures (Health and Safety at Work Act 1974). This includes controlling the risks that arise from work activities, including the creation of dust and fumes. By implementing effective monitoring solutions, employers can help to prevent workers from inhaling dust that can lead to detrimental health issues.
Casella’s Dust Detective is lightweight and portable and offers a solution for site operators and managers who need to monitor the levels of harmful dust on site.
It encompasses the Microdust Pro real time dust monitor, and the Apex2 air-sampling pump. The Detective unit is easy to assemble, provides fast real time data that is easily downloadable for analysis and reporting, and allows the user to identify the trends in dust levels, areas of concern and hot spots that require action. Improvements have been made to the enclosure by using quick release clips around the measurement probe, allowing fast setup times. The portable enclosure will also save effort as the internal layout has been improved to allow everything to be contained neatly inside, including calibration devices.
Tim Turney, technical product manager at Casella, explains: “The new and improved Dust Detective Enclosure’s real time data is measured and samples can also be taken gravimetrically. Ensuring accurate data is easy to obtain, the equipment’s speedy setup process and increased internal space will make monitoring pain-free, enabling site operators to easily carry all the necessary equipment around on site.”
