Sunbelt Rentals committed to sustainable solutions
14 September 2023
By increasing the availability and accessibility of clean energy solutions, Sunbelt Rentals is enabling customers to reduce their reliance on traditional fuel

SUNBELT RENTALS is committed to creating a greener future for customers, colleagues, communities, and climate by investing in new low-carbon technology and innovating cleaner, greener solutions to reduce harmful emissions and reduce energy consumption.
Introducing sustainable welder generators
Sunbelt Rentals partnered with Shindaiwa, a leading supplier of welder generators, to introduce the more than 100 revolutionary Eco Hybrid welder generators to its industrial business to support existing and new customer contracts. The new Eco Hybrid welder generators were introduced across the depot network on refineries, chemical plants, industrial sites, and steelworks in the UK.
The 300-amp Shindaiwa Eco Hybrid welder generator sets the standard for more environmentally friendly welding solutions by saving customers up to 60% in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous eco models.
It’s equipped with several innovative features from auto stop/start, ultra-quiet technology and a capacitor that works alongside the Stage V diesel engine to deliver responsive power. Units are supplied with a Chalwyn valve and spark arrestor fitted to ensure they meet the stringent safety requirements of COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) sites.
Skoon Partnership Software Solutions
The company has also partnered with Skoon, an online software platform that offers clean energy solutions and software tools to the Film and TV, Electricity Grid and Construction industries.
The businesses have entered into a one-year partnership to support customers in the construction, events and film and TV industries with a seamless booking system to access sustainable clean energy products. On top of that, the software platform allows for customer-friendly reporting on energy usage and savings.
Together, this partnership will assist the strategic goals of customers to transition to clean alternatives for diesel generators by increasing the ease of hiring battery storage units, hydrogen generators and solar arrays.
Providing silent power for the film industry
With multiple filming locations sited in remote areas, and many sites without access to mains electricity, the film and TV industry is heavily reliant on temporary power solutions such as generators.
When the team at Location One sought to trial a cleaner energy set-up for one of their latest productions in the southwest of England, Sunbelt Rentals’ Energy Team supported with an integrated solution. They installed a (100kVA) generator to deliver 24/7 power to the nine large trailers and all other supporting services at Unit Base for Location One.
Although the generator was fuelled exclusively with renewable HVO, that didn’t go far enough. The challenge was to demonstrate the significant reduction in carbon emissions through implementing a hybrid solution (generator and battery storage unit set-up) without compromising the smooth-running of their location shoot or blowing their budget. By adding a single Battery Storage Unit (BSU) to work alongside the 100kVA generator they created a hybrid power set up that could deliver lower fuel costs, periods of silent running and lower emissions.
The BSU and generator were set up in full hybrid mode with the BSU configured as the prime source of power to Unit Base and the generator as back-up. After seven days the hybrid set-up had reduced the site’s fuel and CO2e emissions by 40% compared with operating a standard diesel generator, not to mention a 40% reduction in harmful NOx, particulate matter, and CO emissions.
"At Sunbelt Rentals we’re passionate about investing in new products and technologies to provide our customers with the most innovative and sustainable solutions on the market to reduce their carbon footprint and increase energy efficiencies," said a spokesperson for the company.
"We believe, through collaboration and partnerships, we can provide more sustainable solutions through rental equipment. We will continue to work hard towards our commitment to a sustainable future and welcome others to join our journey, towards a greener climate, thriving communities, successful customers, and engaged colleagues providing greater social impact."
