Look beyond the 'tech' to profit from RFID's real value

SINCE ITS patenting some 50 years ago, RFID has now transitioned from pilot programmes to more widespread deployments, demonstrating confidence in the technology’s maturity and proven business value.

But, argues TSC Auto ID, its technology is only part of the equation, and warehouse and logistics operators should start viewing RFID as part of a normal warehouse process rather than a separate technology layer.
Modern warehouses are expected to process more items, complete more orders, and maintain accurate stock information with less manual effort. As operations increase in volume and speed, RFID is already triumphing over individual identification methods—which can cause bottlenecks—as it allows multiple tagged objects to be scanned simultaneously and without direct line of sight.
But RFID’s true value is not simply about faster scanning. In modern warehouse operations, it can also support stock registration, inventory counting, item locating, picking, shipment verification, and activity reporting. Enterprise mobile computers (EMC), handheld and fixed RFID readers, RFID printers, operator interfaces and warehouse software each support a different stage of the warehouse process. And when those roles are connected around a clear workflow, warehouses benefit from better visibility and a stronger basis for accurate day-to-day decisions.
The real transformation, therefore, is not just moving from barcode to RFID, it’s also about rethinking RFID’s increasingly pivotal role in warehouse processes, where physical events can be captured, compared, and acted on with greater speed and clarity.
RFID can transform warehouse management as it connects physical stock with digital information quicker, more accurately and with less repetitive handling. Its most useful applications are practical ones: registering items, counting inventory, locating stock, supporting picks, checking shipments, and creating a more complete activity history.
Before you start
RFID should be implemented around a well-defined process. Accurate stock registration, consistent label placement, clear storage rules, and exception handling all need to be considered as they’re as important as the reader technology itself.
Read performance can also vary depending on the item material, tag type, label position, warehouse layout, and reader configuration. For that reason, real-world testing is important before a process is scaled across the warehouse.
The workflow should also remain simple for the operator. As Make UK cautioned, digital transformation succeeds only when workers have the skills to implement and sustain it. Workers therefore need to understand what the system is asking them to do, how to interpret a successful read, and what action to take when an item is missing, unexpected, or not detected.
RFID works best as part of a complete operational design rather than just a replacement for other existing identification methods. In many warehouses, RFID and barcoding work together as complementary technologies, with each used where it provides the clearest operational benefit.

RFID printers and encoders create labels and links to establish digital identities. Handheld readers make that identity useful for fast inventory counting and item locating. Fixed readers can automate checks at controlled points such as dispatch. EMCs connect workers with the workflow, while the backend connects those physical events with inventory records.
Warehouses benefit from better visibility but reliable visibility starts with reliable identity. If an item is associated with incorrect information when its identity is created, faster reading will simply carry that problem further and quicker through the warehouse.
TSC advises that RFID adoption, therefore, is more process-driven. Operators should ask where measurable operational value can best be delivered rather than where the technology could theoretically be deployed. Hybrid barcode and RFID environments will become normal, with each technology removing the most operational friction and supporting the processes where it performs best.
And as more physical events are captured automatically, warehouse teams will spend less time confirming routine activity and more time resolving exceptions.
