Cinram Logistics UK uses a voicedirected picking (VDP) system from Knapp UK at its Aylesbury site. Ten VDP terminals are used for picking fast-moving lines from pallets and slow-moving, bulky articles from static shelving.

Knapp upgraded both hardware and software at the distribution centre. New equipment includes a KiSoft Klass-X WCS, a PLC upgrade from Siemens S5 to S7 and modernisation of the pick-to-light system, including replacement of all 8456 displays with latest technology.

With a VDP system, each operator is supplied with orders to a headset via radio frequency, with each step in the picking sequence confirmed verbally. This allows staff to use both hands for picking. KISoft Voice, Knapp's VDP software, can use several different languages simultaneously, allowing clients to integrate nonmother- tongue staff.

Benefits claimed include efficient picking, precise inventory control and accurate lot identification.
