One company to benefit from
long term boiler hire is
Stowmarket based PPG
Industries. Originally the paint
manufacturer had two 10t boilers
running on heavy fuel oil with a
large 8in distribution system.
To check efficiency, East Anglia University was asked to undertake an indepth steam survey. It calculated that for every meter of the 8in lagged steam main it cost £400 per year in heat loss. It was also found that the site load had reduced to 3000kg/h for process and in winter a further 3000kg for heating.
PPG's maintenance manager, Jim Mackay was tasked with overcoming the problem. Initially a 500kg/h steam boiler from Byworth was hired to heat the paint stores which was the furthest distance from the boiler house supplied by the 8in main. It became clear this was not large enough, but demonstrated the savings in not running the long pipe leg of 8in.
The second winter hire boiler was a 1000kg/h unit and has become a regular on site, providing an economical solution. For the main site, which had a 6000kg/h winter load and 3000kg/h summer load, Byworth proposed a pair of 3000kg/hr Yorkshireman2 trailerised boilers on a long term basis.
Now in the third year of a five year contract, PPG is delighted both with the savings and the service it has received from Byworth.
