Bearing compass
14 February 2014
Designed for pillow block and flanged bearing units, ABB's rotating measurement finder helps the user select the most appropriate replacement bearings.

Dubbed the Bearing Compass, it lists all the common bearing types and designations, with the common references and sizes of standard housed bearings included.
"It is important to have all the housing data and dimensions on-hand when replacing a bearing, as specifying an incorrect bearing can have a big impact on swap-out time and can quickly escalate machine downtime,” explains Tristin Hurst, ABB’s bearings product manager.
The ability to swap-out bearings quickly and accurately is an important factor when downtime for repairs and maintenance means lost production.
Machines need to be up-and-running again as quickly as possible. "Bearings installed in recycling, aggregates or mining equipment often need regular maintenance and can often fail as they operate in some of the harshest conditions. This is why we developed the Bearing Compasses to make the specification and ordering of replacement bearings a straight forward task,” adds Hurst.
The pillow block housed Bearing Compass features the ABB Dodge Setscrew ball bearings, with the reverse featuring the heavier duty ABB Dodge ISN spherical roller bearings. The ISN bearings feature an easy-on, easy-off adapter sleeve mounting, making them quick to install compared to standard housed bearings.
A second Bearing Compass, features the ABB Dodge 2-bolt and 4-bolt flange housing ball bearings with standard shaft-mount inserts. These are dimensionally identical to standard bearings and are directly interchangeable with most existing housed bearings on the market.
