Commitment rewarded

10 November 2014

It has been a busy end to the year for the BSIF with the 17th Annual Networking day being held in The Belfry. The gathering of delegates and guests is a great way of highlighting the various benefits of a BSIF membership, as is the awards ceremony which took place later in the day

The first award was for Commitment to Federation Activities. This was presented to an individual who, with the support of his organisation, has committed exceptional resources to the work of the BSIF. Alan McArthur of 3M UK was the winner of this award.

McArthur is currently chair of the Respiratory Protection Product Group. He has been instrumental within the development of the federation, constantly developing new, relevant initiatives to support the market whilst seeking to expand the correct use of RPE and the benefits of face fit testing through his activities on the Fit 2 Fit Technical Committee. His work on  the BSIF ‘Clean Air? Take Care’ campaign led to a measurable increase in those willing to take guidance on the correct product selection for respiratory hazards.

The winner of this year’s Outstanding Contribution Award was John Cairns, chair of Safety Groups UK. The McOnie Agency, sponsor of the award, presented Cairns with a trophy in recognition of his notable successes. Working in the safety industry since 1974, he plays a critical role in the network of local Occupational Health and Safety Groups throughout the UK.  He is strongly committed to promoting safety and health to users nationwide and has won several awards for his achievements, including the first Winner IOSH UK Innovation Award in 1995 and the 2010 IOSH UK Award for Partnerships.

Commenting on both awards, Alan Murray, CEO of the BSIF (pictured) said: "We are proud to have members in the federation such as Alan McArthur and John Cairns and collectively we will continue to work towards improving occupational safety for all – our fundamental value as a Federation. It is important to celebrate our successes and to highlight the innovative work being completed currently that is helping the industry progress.”
