BOHS champions Global Asbestos Awareness Week
02 April 2015
BOHS, the chartered society for worker health protection is supporting Global Asbestos Awareness Week (1st to 7th April, 2015), an initiative dedicated to raising awareness of the many dangers and effects of asbestos.

'Hear Asbestos. Think Prevention' is the focus of the week organised by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation (ADAO), encouraging countries still using it to stop and helping workers who could be exposed to it, receive the correct protection.
Commenting on the week, Steve Perkins, CEO of the BOHS said "More then 107,000 people worldwide die from asbestos related diseases every year and it is crucial this global campaign has UK support. The recent suggestions that asbestos could still be present in nine out of 10 schools in the UK highlights that for us, asbestos remains a pressing issue requiring measured monitoring and managing.”
BOHS has a long and esteemed history of providing national and international leadership on protection against asbestos, in particular with regard to asbestos standard setting and competency qualifications. BOHS has published methods of asbestos dust control since the 1960s. Indeed the first major asbestos exposure standard in the UK, for chrysotile asbestos was produced in 1968 by BOHS. The Society also produced important Codes of Practice on clearance testing and bulk sampling in the 1980s.
