Giant plant given blast

04 August 2015

Mundy Blast Cleaning has completed a plant renovation project for Cemex after the global leader in the building materials industry transferred its ready mixed concrete manufacturing complex from Alexandra Dock in Hull, to the city's Albert Docks.

The relocation of the company meant that all plant, including conveyors, tanks, mixers and hoppers had to be dismantled and transferred to the new site.

Before being re-erected all equipment had to be rigorously blast cleaned, washed down and painted. Each individual piece had to be treated and coated in the correct order to ensure the giant plant could be rebuilt to meet a tight time schedule.

Mundy’s trained staff carried out initial tests to decide the best blast medium that would remove the heavy cement and concrete residues coating the steelwork. A silica slag grit known as Black Beauty was selected and used at 100psi through the blast cleaning equipment connected to a 450 CFM compressor. This was followed by a hot water and hydrochloric acid mix pressure wash at 4,000psi and then repainting in Cemex colours using Sigmafast 9010 off white heavy duty paint. Altogether 300 litres of paint was applied by the painting team utilising an airless sprayer.
