Hotmelt adhesive used to restore mask
29 June 2016
The 3000 year-old golden mask of King Tut Ankh Amun is housed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. During routine cleaning, the beard fell off and, although it was hastily glued back into position, further damage occurred. Henkel came up with a solution.

Henkel developed a method to remove the epoxy from the mask without leaving any residue and developed a customised hotmelt adhesive alternative that could withstand high ambient temperatures and vibration caused during transportation.
Christian Eckmann of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz, said: “The competent advice and support from the research experts at Henkel made a significant contribution to the project’s success.”
