Breathing safely in the costume department

14 September 2017

When the English National Opera was experiencing problems with fume extraction in its costume department, Fercell provided a solution.

Many of the opera's elaborate costumes are made on the premises at the London Coliseum. A new fume extraction system was needed in order to extract solvent fume created by the gluing of intricate masks and clothing.

A centrifugal fan had stopped working and was unserviceable, so Fercell removed it and replaced it with a Geovent MSQ centrifugal fan set.

The current ducting system consisted of an inefficient three-way development and unnecessarily long lengths of hose. Fercell's engineer installed a correctly-sized and balanced ducting system, linked to the connection of an articulated arm and fume cabinet. Fumes are now collected by a flexible arm, giving costume designers more space to work as less space is taken up by equipment. Fumes are collected and disposed of externally. www.fercell.com/ventilation
