Taming the Beast from the East

A condition report from Medway power plant in Kent showed that a Veotec trace heated air intake system is performing well. Set to automatic and requiring no maintenance, the system has prevented winter snow and ice build-up.
The system was installed over four years ago. Due to its coastal location the Medway site suffered from two distinct issues, both of which were causing loss of power from the gas turbine and the need for increased compressor washes to maintain performance: Moisture-laden air from the sea was corrosive in nature, while the occurrence of freezing fog caused a steep rise in pressure drop across the filter system and moisture carry over into the system.
Veotec manufactured a two-stage filter system to protect the final H10 filters from moisture carry over, while also protecting the turbine and compressor from salt-laden air.
The new system comprises a trace heated marine vane separator with a G4 panel filter.
In its first year of operation on the first of two turbines it proved to give a significant advantage in power loss, so the decision was taken to install the system on the second turbine.
