Automotive measurement microphone
15 January 2019
The 146AE automotive measurement microphone from GRAS Sound & Vibration UK has a shock, dust and oil mist resistant design and is helping vehicle manufacturers meet industry noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance requirements by delivering accurate measurement data under extreme conditions.

The robust 146AE measurement microphone is being used across a range of automotive applications, including in car dynamic measuring, tyre testing, on track and acoustic and vibrational transfer function. It is also being used for high temperature, under bonnet testing, in transmission tunnels for gearbox / differential related noise and for all kinds of whine, creaks and rattles in the vehicle cabin.
The microphone is said to minimise costly re-testing or re-scheduling, whilst providing efficiency, valid data and high performance.
It performs in real-life automotive application conditions with strong vibrations, drop, extreme temperatures and water or dust. As a result, it is suitable for engine compartment measurements, transmissions and exhaust and brake noise tests.
The 146AE is designed for the extreme conditions commonly found in automotive application testing conditions:
- Shock and drop resistant
- Water, oil and dust-proof (IP67 Rated) – withstands rain, high humidity and oil mist
- Dust, water and high-speed particle protected with a replaceable grid – change the filter not the microphone
- Can be used at high temperatures (125°C)
- Power On Indicator
- Online data – ensure valid data with access to electronic calibration data for your system software
- Repairable diaphragm
Available with a five-year warranty and offering precise data, the 146AE boasts a frequency range and dynamic range from IEC-compatible ½in measurement microphones of 3.15Hz to 20kHz, 18dB(A) to 138dB and 50mV/Pa.
