Digital Permit to Work to boost industrial safety

27 January 2023

A NEW software solution from Elecosoft will help industrial companies boost safety for workers who face risk on maintenance and operational tasks.

The new Digital Permit to Work module in Elecosoft’s ShireSystem CMMS, provides businesses with more control and insight into safety-critical operations.

Work permits are required before an operator can start tasks where they are exposed to risk from extreme heat or cold, electric shock, confined spaces, working at height or ground disturbance.

Businesses traditionally use paper, email and file servers to record and track Permits to Work. This makes it difficult to apply company-wide processes and track performance consistently.

"We introduced a Permit to Work module in our ShireSystem software to enhance protection for workers and enable businesses to avoid unplanned downtime and maintain their reputation," said Gary Marsden, Elecosoft's global product manager for ShireSystem by Elecosoft.

The software-based approach enhances safety by standardising all the important factors for work permits, such as competence, procedures and communications. Using central recording and a digital audit trail means that the tool saves time for managers, who can see at a glance that teams are following procedures. As a result, businesses can reduce risk of personal injury and damage to property.

Elecosoft developed the new module as an add-on to its ShireSystem software, a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system. It is used globally in the aviation, automotive, healthcare, education, food and drink manufacturing, industrial and retail sectors.
