Using AR to bridge the gap between humans and robots
21 August 2020
Augmented-reality operator guidance systems can transform workstations into a digital and interactive environment, reducing human error by projecting step-by-step instructions on to a surface that guides operators as they work, according to The Sempre Group.
The company says systems like the Arkite Human Interface Mate (HIM) work according to a right-first-time model and can reduce waste commonly caused by human error by up to 75%. They use safety features like light-picking and visual projection to notify the user if a step is not completed correctly and prevent them from moving on unless the task is completed to the correct standard.
The Sempre Group adds that smart sensors add validation by taking time stamps and qualitatively measuring performance to ensure that certain tasks have been completed properly. In this way, the sensors reduce the need for training and management support, without forfeiting quality standards and control of the assembly line. These systems also digitalise the resulting data and integrate it with existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, thus cutting down on paperwork, the Sempre Group points out.
It concludes that AR operator guidance systems are useful tools for plant managers to ensure their people perform with some of the benefits of a robot, thus providing the best of both worlds.
