A CMMS (computerised maintenance management system) from CARL Software has been chosen by Alstom Transport to help operators manage maintenance at Cairo Metro

In February 2012 The Cairo Metro opened the first phase of Line 3, which links the eastern part of Cairo with the city centre.

Implementation of Line 3 was achieved by a consortium of French companies, including the Alstom Group whose role included implementing a CMMS. Its choice was CARL Source Transport from CARL Software. This will be used to assist operators with maintenance of fixed installations in the depot and will help manage maintenance of the rolling stock on Line 3.

Alstom Transport is reported to have opted for the CARL Software solution due to its feature-rich functionality: Tailored to transport sector needs Affords a wide range of parameter settings and screen customisation User-friendly ergonomic design Multilingual features CARL's engagement with the aims of the project The two companies quickly forged a partner relationship and set about simplifying the product in order to make it easy to use by technicians while maintaining functional performance to meet management requirements.

The companies also made sure they engaged the suport of the Egyptian teams by providing customised training courses and by providing documents in Arablic.

To simplify use and to ensure a clear understanding of the software, Alstom Transport and CARL Software customised both the screens and the forms by user profiles and translated the labels of the fields into English and Arabic.

In parallel, incident and milometer management system interfaces were set up to establish maintenance requests and to optimise the creation of preventive maintenance schedules.

In carrying out the project, Alstom teams have benefitted from an initial transfer of skills on CARL Source. Together the two partners have created the tree structure, codified the equipment, and translated the information into Arabic.

The second phase of the project for the Alstom Transport and CARL Software teams in Cairo involved implementation of the software and carrying out training using an illustrated and personalised user guide.

The success of the collaboration between Alstom Transport and CARL Software on the Cairo Metro project, has resulted in CARL Software being awarded a contract to provide a CMMS for a tramway project in Tunis.
