In order to deliver a relevant and forward thinking show in 2013, the team at Safety & Health Expo recently hosted a focus group to find out exactly how the role of today's health & safety professional is evolving. The results found that alongside day-to-day responsibilities the top challenges were safety culture within the workplace and managing employee health and wellbeing.
This industry insight has helped to shape the event this year, ensuring that along with providing the latest information on products and legislation, health and safety end user case studies, seminars from some of the leading voices in the industry and access to top associations and CPD opportunities, Safety and Health Expo 2013 (NEC, Birmingham, 14th to16th May) will offer practical solutions for enhancing safety and health culture and employee health and wellbeing.
Safety and Health Expo is an annual exhibition for the occupational safety and health industry and has the support of key industry partners: The Institute of Occupational Safety & Health, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the British Safety Industry Federation.
A highlight of the show will be the Arco Academy that will encourage visitors to take part in live demonstrations and discussions that centre on education through innovation, and the growing role behavioural safety is playing in transforming safety cultures across the globe. This interactive theatre will host vibrant, thought-provoking presentations from organisations such as ARCO, Juice Learning, OSHCR, ARC Associates, HSE, BSIF and Environment Agency.
Returning for a fifth year, one of the most popular and well attended seminar theatres of the entire show, the SHP Legal Arena 2013 will bring together a 'dream team' of legal experts including Kevin Bridges from Pinsent Masons; Jon Cooper from Bond Pearce; Peter Forshaw of Weightmans; and Ron Reid from Shoosmiths along with other solicitors, presenting health and safety cases and topics, and offering advice on how to avoid workplace incidents and prosecutions.
New for this year will be a series of special 'Fee for Intervention' sessions led by HSE inspectors who will explain how the scheme operates and the safety issues that are most likely to attract FFI activity.
The Barbour Director's Club offers an opportunity for networking with top tier management working within health and safety, while also providing commercially driven debates on the issues faced by leaders across the globe. The Club offers valuable strategic insight for those working in senior positions within the industry. One of the many topics will be Cultural Safety by Tim Marsh of Ryder Marsh, who has produced many safety training videos including 'Drive Smarter' and the extensive 'Safety Leadership' series with Baker-media and 'There's Always a Reason' and 'Safety Watch'.
Another areas of focus will be the increasing importance of health and wellbeing.
According to Eurostat figures from 2007, one in 10 European workers had reported a work-related health problem. Visitors will be able to discover straightforward, costeffective measures that could have an immediate impact on any workplace.
The introduction of the Health & Wellbeing Theatre will address issues to do with boosting productivity within the workplace through a variety of initiatives, including stress management, ergonomics, behavioural safety, equality and diversity.
The sessions will cover employer obligations, how to promote health and wellbeing and the impact this has on the bottom line.
Confirmed activity within this theatre includes a BSIF session titled It's in your hands, the importance of hand hygiene. Trainers in conflict management, Maybo, will present Managing conflict in the workplace, while Physioworld will explore Cognitive behavioural therapy. Let's Get Healthy has confirmed a workshop - Reduce stress and use technology to support employee health & wellbeing.
Also new is the Business Driver Safety Zone, launching in partnership with Fleet21 and Honda UK. With so much confusion surrounding certain areas of business driver safety and compliance, this feature promises to be a valuable addition to the show.
The Access Industry Forum's Knowledge Base -Working at Height returns, bringing together trade associations and federations involved in work at height in a programme that covers key topics affecting the sector.
