New venue plus new features

The event will provide visitors with information on the latest legislation, health and safety case studies, the opportunity to meet many of the industry’s most respected organisations and the chance to network with other professionals.

 

The three-day exhibition is co-located with established exhibitions including MAINTEC 2014 and Facilities Management 2014 and aims to meet the needs of those visitors who have been visiting the NEC on an annual basis to get their health and safety information, as well as giving visitors to MAINTEC and Facilities Management the opportunity to expand the range of products they can evaluate, experts that they can speak to and seminars they can attend.

 

Conference programme

Day 1 

The comprehensive conference programme, which is free of charge and is put together by the British Safety Council, will deliver the latest news and legislative updates within the health and safety industry. Opening the three-day conference is the seminar entitled ‘Recent Developments in Health and Safety Regulation - Changes and Challenges’ delivered by Jane Willis, Director of Cross-cutting Interventions, Health & Safety Executive.

 

The presentation will give an overview of the many developments in health and safety regulation and its enforcement in the UK following a number of different reviews since 2010, with a key focus on the recently published Triennial review. It will consider the impact and challenges of these changes for both the regulator and the regulated and also outline what these are likely to mean for future regulation.

 

Looking at the latest developments in health and safety regulations will be Mark Tyler, solicitor at Salutaris Legal with his seminar entitled ‘Key Developments in Health and Safety Law’. This session will look at the impact that the Professor Löfstedt reform programme has had, the HSE’s ‘Fees for Intervention’ initiative and developments in sentencing for health and safety offences.

Day 2 

On day two of the event, providing an insight into how large manufacturing businesses handle their safety requirement is John Holt, Director HS&E at Rolls-Royce plc with his seminar entitled ‘Delivering health and safety in a global power systems business’. His presentation is aimed at the functional leader who wants to know how to improve health and safety in the workplace and will consist of an introduction/background to Rolls-Royce and the different markets it serves, its health and safety challenges and the policies put in place to improve health and safety. In addition it will detail strategies that respond to a changing business and the role of the health and safety function in supporting global improvements. 

 

For those wanting to keep up-to-date with recent landmark health and safety cases, the presentation entitled ‘Health and Safety case law update’ will be essential. Delivered by Kevin Bridges, regulatory partner, Pinsent Masons LLP, the presentation will showcase some of the most significant court cases in the last 12 months in health and safety and fire safety, with Bridges' views on what practical relevance they have. In particular, he will deliver an update on those cases currently before the courts involving ‘Corporate Manslaughter’.

Day 3 

On day three of the event, Health & Safety Director at Crossrail, Steve Hails will give a presentation entitled ‘Crossrail – The Challenges and Opportunities’. Hail’s presentation will include detailed information on the project such as the facts and statistics, the role/profile of the team, the sheer scale and technical challenge of the project, philosophy, solutions and innovations, working with contractors etc. Additionally the presentation will look at the changing role of health and safety as the project progresses while leaving a lasting legacy.

 

Also taking place on day three is the presentation entitled ‘Environment and Sustainability – Policy and Practice’. Presented by Howard Dawes, Senior Consultant - Environment and Keith Whitehead, Senior Consultant – Environment, British Safety Council, the session will provide an interactive two-part presentation highlighting a number of operational and organisational environmental and sustainability issues that business leaders need to be aware of. Dawes will identify a number of policy and regulatory concerns that organisations need to deal with, while Whitehead will lead a participative session looking at recent developments in ‘Greenhouse Gas’ reporting and environmental management systems.

 

Working at height 

As well as the British Safety Council conference stream there are other, more practical, seminars taking place across the event. On all three days visitors will have the chance to listen to the Access Industry Forum deliver a presentation entitled 'Working at height: Take it from the top'. With falls from height still the single biggest cause of deaths in the workplace, the Access Industry Forum will offer practical insights and information about the latest developments, standards and guidance influencing best practice in the work at height sector. 

 

Safety dialogue 

Something exciting for this year’s event is the Safety Dialogue Live Panel. The Live Panel offers visitors the opportunity to engage with live debates throughout the event surrounding the most significant issues. This year the panel of experts will focus on the following issues: ‘Noise Induced Hearing Loss – protect at work, educate for life’, ‘Improving PPE compliance’ and whether ‘Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) selection can be simplified’. 

 

Breakfast briefings 

Also new to the event are the ‘Breakfast Briefings’. Before the exhibition opens, visitors will have the chance to join their peers and network over breakfast.  These sessions will run between 8.00am to 9.00am throughout the three-event and they will have a different guest speaker for each day.  

 

Champions workshop 

Furthermore, giving visitors the chance to expand their knowledge, network with their local Safety Groups and the opportunity to volunteer to become a ‘Health Risks at Work Champion’ will be the Health Risks at Work organisation and their Champions Workshop, which runs throughout the event.
