A series of new application guides from ABB explains how to optimise boiler chemistry and steam quality in power generation applications.

Produced as part of the launch of the latest products in ABB's Navigator analyser range, each guide focuses on a particular parameter. Optimising power plant performance through silica monitoring, for example, explains how monitoring can help prevent corrosion and build-up of scale. If left uncontrolled, the accumulation of silica can reduce the performance of key plant including the boiler and downstream plant such as the steam turbine. The guide explains how ABB's Navigator 600 Silica analyser can be used to help control silica formation and the key points around the steam loop where monitoring should be carried out.
The other three guides focus on the parameters covered by ABB's new Navigator 500 range, which includes versions for monitoring dissolved oxygen, hydrazine and sodium.
Improving dissolved oxygen control through online monitoring describes how continuous monitoring can help to significantly reduce the risk of corrosion caused by excess oxygen concentrations in boiler water. The guide also uses an easy-to-follow illustration to highlight the main points around the steam loop where dissolved oxygen should be monitored.
Techniques for further reducing dissolved oxygen levels are covered in the guide Reducing dissolved oxygen through hydrazine dosing. Even after deaeration, it will still be necessary to administer some form of post treatment in order to achieve further reductions in dissolved oxygen levels. One way of doing this is by dosing the boiler feedwater with hydrazine. As a powerful reducing agent, hydrazine reduces oxygen to form nitrogen and water, which can help to further reduce dissolved oxygen levels to concentrations below five parts per billion.
The guide shows how continuous monitoring of hydrazine throughout the feedwater loop can help to achieve the most effective ratio of hydrazine to dissolved oxygen.
Controlling sodium concentrations through on-line analysis explains how to minimise the impact of sodium on power plant performance. A challenge for power plant operators is that nearly all sodium compounds are water soluble, presenting a problem not only within the boiler itself but in the steam supply through carryover.
The guide explains how continuous online monitoring can help to reduce sodium levels and details the key points around the steam raising cycle where monitoring should be carried out.
