MWA reduces the pressure during strawberry picking season

23 September 2014

A leading UK produce specialist was able to start the ‘strawberry picking season’ on time thanks to the quick thinking of a Birmingham company.

S&A Produce turned to MWA Technology to source a Pressure Reduction Metering Skid (PRMS) in record time, so that power could be safely fitted to a key production site in Herefordshire.

It proved a good decision with the metering specialist using its strong relationships with global manufacturers to design and develop a bespoke PRMS that was delivered within just four weeks…28 days ahead of the original date given.

Martin Wardell, Managing Director at MWA Technology, commented: "The skid takes in gas at a high pressure, reduces it to the desired level for use and then measures that reading.

"These installations are crucial to the safe and cost effective supply of gas to many commercial and industrial properties. They normally take about 8 to 10 weeks from point of order to completion, but it has been known to slip into a further two weeks depending where they are manufactured.”

He continued: "We worked with S&A to understand the requirements and then set about bringing in Common SA to manufacture and Zenenergy to help us with bespoke design features so it met the necessary specification.

"The PRMS is a 2 bar inlet, 200m bar outlet unit rated 1mW and will be used on a 1.5km DN250 pipeline that has subsequently been laid by the operator and connection made by National Grid.

"The meter and electronic volume corrector were produced and the rig assembled, powder coated, installed and commissioned at the customer’s site in Hereford within four weeks of receiving the order.”

Speed of response has been one of the key drivers behind MWA Technology’s recent growth, which has seen it reach £5m sales for the first time in its 21-year history.

The company currently supplies over 500 metering solutions to distributors, contractors, OEMs and energy monitoring professionals, with high profile projects completed at Oxford University, Kew Gardens and Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.

Recent investment has doubled the size of its logistics and warehouse operation as well as introducing new services to clients including repair and refurbishment of meters, testing, technical and on-site support.

This expansion is being supported by a more concerted approach to marketing, which has seen development of its online and social media presence and involvement in industry focus sessions, such as the Ofgem RHI Advisory Group.
