Maintenance: Moving with the times
09 March 2016
Maintec 2016, returns to Birmingham’s NEC from 22nd to 24th March and will feature a new seminar programme, a top speaker line-up and and a wide range of exhibitors
The Maintec 2016 seminar programme provides maintenance professionals and engineers with a range of educational opportunities to learn about the latest trends, market drivers and issues facing the maintenance community.
Daniel Gray, Maintec event manager, comments: “The momentum for this year’s show is really gathering pace. We are thrilled to have a brand new seminar programme lined up for our visitors this year, featuring some leading authorities from the maintenance industry. They will be covering some of the key topics that have got the industry talking, including Industry 4.0, Big Data and workflow processes. This year’s show is not one to be missed!”
Keynote presentations
The seminar programme will feature keynote presentations from experts working right across the maintenance spectrum.
Al Gane, maintenance manager at Jaguar Land Rover, will explore 'The challenge of keeping the Range Rover assembly line producing a new car every 90 seconds'. During his presentation, Gane will look back on his career as an engineer in the Royal Navy and discuss the challenges he faced as a maintenance manager in a war zone. He will talk about his role at JLR and the different approaches taken by non-profit and profit-based organisations. Plus he will analyse the challenges faced when implementing future technology, whilst maintaining equipment and controls standardisation.
Paul Hingley, business manager data services CMR cloud and plant security services, plant analytical services and safety services at Siemens Customer Service, will also be headlining at the show. During his talk, 'Where Big Data meets Smart Data', Hingley will look at turning data into value and what this means for an integrated approach to maintenance, with live visualisation and predictable failure data using algorithms. He will also explore the investment into technology that is required to take advantage of Industry 4.0.
Seminar sessions
In addition to the keynote presentations there will be a host of exhibitor seminars, offering expertise drawn from the industry coal-face.
For example, a modern maintenance strategy is not simply focused on the mean time between failure and mean time to repair, but on a much broader view of equipment performance in terms of quality, cost, delivery and particular product value streams. With this in mind Malcolm Jones, principal engineer – TPM, will focus on combining value stream, risk-based and TPM approaches when developing a maintenance strategy for a competitive advantage.
Alexander Hill, Co-founder at Senseye, will be presenting 'Prognostics as a product', where he will consider how prognostics have been used in aerospace, in context with other analysis types. He will also explain why he believes it adds greatest value over diagnostics and predictive analytics.
Roy Davis, senior consultant with MCP, and Gary Power, reliability lead with MSD, will consider the journey to reliability excellence, in a sterile pharmaceutical environment. The presentation will feature a case study of a new pharmaceutical plant which has developed and implemented a world class asset management system, incorporating best practice maintenance and reliability approaches. The seminar will also look at the use of a range of condition monitoring tools and techniques within clean room and plant room environments.
The Internet of Things, the 4.0 Industrial Age, and what they could mean for manufacturers in the UK, are hot topics within the maintenance sector at the moment. With this in mind, in Managing Maintenance in 4.0, David Hipkin, group managing director at SoftSols, will demonstrate how equipment sensors, data exchange and system automation can streamline maintenance management in this smart era.
On the second day of the show, Jit Parelt, Fluke’s UK technical sales manager, will explore how Fluke Connect Assets’ system of software and wireless tools enables maintenance managers to build and sustain successful maintenance programs.
George Varga, regional manager at SPM Instrument, will consider the economic benefits of condition-based monitoring.
Dean Whittle, training manager at RMS Reliability, will give a graphical and animated introduction to vibration analysis. Throughout his talk, Whittle will explain the origin of the vibration frequencies, amplitudes and motion, and introduce the spectrum, time waveform and phase.
As many industries are increasingly facing challenging business conditions, it is essential to reduce maintenance costs and optimise production, which leaves operators facing numerous challenges. GE and Meridium, have therefore partnered together to offer a predictive maintenance solution — Production Asset Reliability. Tom Berry, senior sales manager at GE, will present this maintenance solution on day two of the seminar programme.
Gary Rees, regional sales manager at UE Systems, will kick off day three with a session considering the benefits of implementing ultrasound technology into the reliability and maintenance program.
Also on day three Dean Whittle, training manager at RMS Reliability, will give his second presentation called: 'Using condition monitoring to improve reliability: Explaining that condition monitoring is useful but the skills of the CM technician can also be used to improve reliability'.
Roy Rothwell, senior consultant, professional services at eMaint EMEA will use Maintec 2016 to explore 'Workflow Processes Development and SOPs'. This session will review the fundamental reasons why organisations should document business processes, and associated workflows, as a best practice.
