Strap and wrap
04 August 2016
Cumberland Packaging, manufacturer of corrugated and solid board, has installed two Mosca KCA and WTR machines to strap and wrap palletised loads of flat-packed cardboard cartons at its site in Shoeburyness, Essex.

In the Cumberland production line, pallets are manually pushed over a light sensor, triggering the Mosca-supplied driven conveyors to transport them into the KCA to be strapped. They are then wrapped by the WTR before collection by forklift truck. The steady stack conveyors ensure safe transit of each bundle through both machines.
The KCA pallet press machine features a built-in integrated conveyor, turncross and centraliser, allowing pallets to be turned in the machine for effective cross strapping and safe, sturdy loads. It can reach speeds of up to 120 pallets per hour for two straps, and 65 pallets per hour for four straps.
The machine uses Mosca's SoniXs ultrasonic sealing technology, in which mechanical vibrations are transmitted under pressure onto the ends of the strap to be joined together, allowing for strong, consistent sealing. This means thinner and narrower straps can be used in many applications, saving money and time.
The WTR fully-automatic stretch wrapping machine has a large rotating turntable, integrated roller conveyor, film tail welding and top platen for lightweight pallet stability. Capacity is up to 40 pallets per hour, with compression force selectable using the operating panel. The pallet’s top edges are automatically protected by the machine, while a lifting device offers optional application to the pallet’s underside.
Installed in April 2016, the new machines join a number of other Mosca products at Cumberland Packaging, a long-time customer whose bundle strappers are all Mosca-made. Cumberland chose Mosca again because of the reliability of the equipment and the high level of service Mosca has provided over the years.
“We’re more than satisfied with both new machines,” commented Mark Bennett, production manager at Cumberland Packaging. “We bought the KCA to replace our previous pallet strapper and it performs better while costing less to maintain. The WTR is the first wrapping machine we’ve ever had – it’s also proved easy to use and extremely valuable to us."
