Staying safe with composite panels
07 October 2016
With the growing popularity of composite insulated panels in modern warehouses, ISD Solutions, which recently completed a multi-million-pound cold storage warehouse for Spanish pharmaceutical giant Grifols, warns that poor awareness of product and installation standards, combined with stringent health and safety requirements can put site personnel and projects at risk.

ISD comments that composite panels are lightweight and durable, with significantly improved thermal properties, but with some panels extending to 15m+ in length, handling can be challenging – even in light winds. With structural properties that are quite different to traditional materials, especially in roofing and ceiling applications, fully qualified installation staff plus H&S guidelines for follow on trades are crucial.
“Panel installation invariably involves working at height, a high risk activity in itself,” explains Steve Baker, Health and Safety Manager at ISD Solutions. “Factor in additional issues such as the use of mobile work platforms, cranes, other contractors working in close proximity and changing weather and you have a complex situation to plan for and manage”.
“H&S and training for our own installation staff is a priority at all times, but on large projects it is equally important that main contractors and other trades who may be unfamiliar with composite panels as a construction medium are fully aware of the issues. Pre-start meetings, site visits to identify hazards and regular monitoring are essential. Situations can change within minutes and we have to be ready to recognise these and respond appropriately so that those involved remain safe.”
Design aspects for each project, with sufficient supporting steel work and fixing points, will also ensure projects proceed smoothly and therefore more safely. ISD Solutions’ recent new design division and improved manufacturing capabilities for off-site developments, mean the company is well positioned to deliver high quality solutions and to design out issues to improve site safety even before construction starts.
