IE3 requirements now covers smaller motors
01 February 2017
Since 1 January, 2017, IE3-grade energy efficiency has been compulsory in the European Union for mains-operated electric motors in the rated power range from 0.75 to 375kW. This extension to smaller motor sizes is based on the Regulation (EC) 640/2009 implementing Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC. Early in 2016, Nord Drivesystems introduced motors rated 0.12 kW and higher according to IEC 60034-30-1 IE3 efficiency and NEMA MG1 Premium Efficiency.

The manufacturer, therefore, exceeds the legal requirements, specifically in the small performance range. Nord says these units make up the bulk of all motors currently in operation and, to make the changeover easy for manufacturers, the dimensions of its IE3 motors remain largely identical to those of IE2 models, allowing retrofitting without modifications.
The Nord portfolio includes motors featuring an IE4 or Super Premium Efficiency rating that are inverter-controlled by default. These solutions achieve even higher efficiency levels. Nord provides information and guidance in selecting motors for worldwide use and designing future-proof systems and plants.
