Wowing welding pupils

06 June 2017

The Welding and Fabrication Department at NCPT Group of Colleges has been treated to a demonstration by ESAB.

ESAB’s Dwayne Gibson demonstrated state-of-the-art welding machines, along with the processes and developments that are being adopted and pioneered by industry. The demonstration was attended by apprentices and full-time students who had the opportunity to take part in a practical session with the new machines and equipment.

Robert Evans, Fabrication and Welding Lecturer at NCPT Group of Colleges, stated: “This was an excellent opportunity for students to be involved in trying out the fantastic new Rebel and Renegade welding machines which are used for precision welding and fabrication in the big wide world of the engineering and construction industry.”

The Rebel EMP 215ic (MIG/TIG/Stick) and EM215iC (MIG only) are go-anywhere, weld-anything machine. When it comes to welding, that means any process, any power, any material, anywhere, and everytime. The Rebel EMP 215ic, a 120V - 230V, CC/CV welding system, provides a true multi-process arc performance, location flexibility, lightweight portability and a special operator interface with LCD/TFT display. A sMIG (smart MIG) function, enables users to begin MIG welding — with an extremely stable arc — simply by setting metal thickness and wire diameter. There is no need to enter information for shielding gas mix. Both units can weld dual shielded flux cored wire up to 1.2mm, suitable for small fabrication shops, construction sites and shipyards, particularly where it makes sense to run short welds with a portable machine and finish the length of the weld with a stationary unit.

In turn, the Renegade ES 300i MMA (SMAW)/LiveTIG (GTAW) welder is an inverter-based MMA/TIG machine which offers extreme power in a compact format: it weighs 15kg, measures 460 x 200 x 320mm and produces a top output of 300 amps at 40% duty cycle. Easy-to-grab front, rear and top handles give the operator maximum flexibility for lifting the machine. Operators can easily pass obstacles, climb stairs, pass through manholes and lift the unit onto racks, making Renegade an optimal welding machine for application such as ship and offshore yards, construction, pipe, repair and maintenance and heavy fabrication.
