Upgraded flux

22 January 2018

ESAB Welding and Cutting has introduced OK Flux 10.62 (Advanced Slag Release) for Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). ESAB says that, compared to many other high basic fluxes, the upgraded OK Flux 10.62 offers better slag release for single and multiple wire SAW processes, and better recyclability due to its high grain strength.

“OK Flux 10.62 (Advanced Slag Release) is a high basicity, neutral, agglomerated flux especially suited for narrow gap welding because of its good slag detachability and smooth sidewall blending,” says Martin Gehring, ESAB global product line manager – mild and low-alloyed SAW. “The narrow running slag allows higher currents in narrow gap joints which means increased deposition rate and consequently higher productivity.”

Due to its high grain strength, the flux being welded is said to have a more constant grain size distribution after multiple recycling circles, on long recycling distances or under higher air pressures. This increases product consistency and weld seam quality and allows users to prolong intervals between refilling the flux hopper.

OK Flux 10.62 (Advanced Slag Release) can be used for butt and fillet welds and works equally well on DC and AC current. Because no alloying takes place, it is suitable for multi-layer welding of unlimited plate thickness. OK Flux 10.62 (Advanced Slag Release) is used for multi-run welding of thick section materials, when high demands on low temperature toughness, strength and CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) values are required. Many offshore constructions, drilling rigs and platforms are welded with OK Flux 10.62 (Advanced Slag Release), as well as all types of pressure vessels, including those for nuclear applications.

Other applications include shipbuilding steels up to EH69 with various wires and approvals as well as on multi-run welded pipes, e.g. for special applications at low temperatures, or on high-strength steels, structural steels and fine-grained steels, including in civil construction and transport industries.

When delivered in BlockPac (moisture protected) packaging, there is no need to redry the flux prior to use onsite because the packaging protects the flux from any moisture absorption during transport and storage.
