Skills shortages and the drive to net zero
30 May 2023
Skills shortages and the drive to net zero GIVEN THE drive to carbon net zero and the aims for 2035 the expectation of over 400,000 new jobs to support this energy transition and innovation in this period will only exaggerate imbalance between the high demand for and the low supply of skilled technical workers which already exists.
What can you do?
Creativity and open-mindedness are essential in dealing with the challenges of recruitment in 2023
- Be open to the idea of employing older workers. Recognising the value of experience and loyalty in this group. Retirement age is planned to be 68 by 2040
- Embrace diversity. Six months after qualification Black and Asian engineering graduates are twice as likely to be unemployed as their White counterparts. Whilst 12% of engineers are women and 9% declare a disability. Clearly the UK's engineering sector is considerably less diverse than the general population, meaning many groups are underrepresented in the workforce.
- Know the market. A professional recruitment partner can save you a lot of time and resources whilst accessing the best candidates but taking into account the cost of a bad hire and loss in productivity, they can save you money too.
